A MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) measures an activity's energy cost relative to resting. Walking is about 3.5 METs, running about 10. Calories burned ≈ MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) ÷ 200 × minutes.

A calories-burned calculator estimates the energy you expend during a physical activity, based on its intensity, your body weight and how long you do it. It helps you understand the output side of the calories-in-versus-out equation when managing weight or planning workouts.
Activities are rated by their MET value - Metabolic Equivalent of Task - which measures energy cost relative to sitting still. Sitting is 1 MET; brisk walking is about 3.5; running is around 10. A higher MET means more calories burned per minute. The tool includes MET values for common activities so you do not have to look them up.
Calories burned are estimated as MET x 3.5 x weight (kg) / 200 x minutes. So a 70 kg person jogging (7 METs) for 30 minutes burns about 7 x 3.5 x 70 / 200 x 30 = 257 kcal. Weight appears in the formula because a heavier body uses more energy to perform the same movement.
Real calorie burn depends on far more than the formula captures - fitness level, intensity within an activity, terrain, efficiency of movement, age and individual metabolism all matter. Two people doing the same run can burn quite different amounts. Treat the figure as a reasonable approximation; heart-rate-based trackers can personalise it further.
