A fuel cost calculator estimates how much fuel a journey will use and what it will cost, from three inputs: the distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the price of fuel. It is the quick way to budget a road trip or compare the running cost of different routes or vehicles.
The fuel needed is distance x consumption. With efficiency in litres per 100 km, fuel used = distance / 100 x consumption, and the cost is that volume x price per litre. So a 500 km trip in a car using 7 L/100 km needs 35 litres; at 1.60 per litre that is 56. The tool also shows the cost per kilometre.
Efficiency here is expressed as litres per 100 km (lower is better) - the standard in most of the world. If your car's economy is quoted in miles per gallon, convert it first (the Fuel Economy converter does this). Real consumption is usually higher than the official figure, especially in city driving, cold weather or with a loaded vehicle, so pad your estimate a little.
Because it shows cost per kilometre, the calculator makes it easy to split travel costs between passengers or to compare vehicles and routes. It is handy for deciding whether a longer but smoother motorway route actually costs more than a shorter stop-start one, and for setting fair mileage reimbursement.
