Grade Point Average (GPA) is a single number that summarises academic performance by averaging the grades from your courses. In the most common system, each letter grade maps to a point value on a 4.0 scale — an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, and so on — and the GPA is the average of those points, weighted by how many credit hours each course was worth.
A GPA is not a simple average of grades; it is weighted by credit hours. A top grade in a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course, because it represents more of your study load. The calculation multiplies each course's grade points by its credits, sums those, and divides by the total credits — which is exactly what this tool does as you type.
On the standard US 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. Some institutions use slightly different mappings or weight honours/AP classes on a 5.0 scale, so always check your school's official policy if precision is critical.
Suppose you take three courses: an A (4.0) worth 3 credits, a B (3.0) worth 3 credits, and a C (2.0) worth 4 credits. Multiply and sum: (4.0×3) + (3.0×3) + (2.0×4) = 12 + 9 + 8 = 29 grade points, across 10 credits. GPA = 29 ÷ 10 = 2.9. The tool performs this automatically and updates live as you add courses.
