Officially the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, it is used worldwide in aviation, the military, emergency services and customer support.
Many letters sound alike over a poor connection - B, P, D, T, V and E are easily confused, as are M and N. Spelling them out with distinct words removes the ambiguity: 'B for Bravo' can never be mistaken for 'D for Delta'.
