Quick answer

Pace is a free, private online tool that lets you calculate running pace per km and per mile, plus speed, from distance and time. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded to a server.

How to use the Pace

  1. Fill in each input field with your own numbers.
  2. Results calculate automatically and update as you change any value.
  3. Read the result cards below the inputs for the full breakdown.
  4. Adjust any field to explore different scenarios instantly.

Privacy: this tool runs entirely in your browser. Your input is never sent to, received by, or stored on any server — there are no uploads and no tracking of what you enter.

About Pace

Pace vs speed

Pace is time per distance (minutes per km); speed is distance per time (km/h). Runners usually train by pace.

How to use it

Enter your distance in km and your time as HH:MM:SS to get pace per km, pace per mile and speed.

Where it helps

Planning race targets, pacing training runs, and comparing efforts.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good pace?
It varies by runner; this tool helps you measure and compare your own.
Does it do miles?
Yes — pace per mile is shown alongside per km.
What time format do I use?
HH:MM:SS, e.g. 00:50:00 for fifty minutes.

Understanding Pace in depth

What running pace is

Pace is the time it takes to cover a set distance - usually expressed as minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile. It is the language runners think in: 5:00 per km is more meaningful for training and racing than a speed in km/h, because it directly tells you the time to expect for a given distance.

Pace versus speed

Pace and speed describe the same thing from opposite directions. Speed is distance per time (km/h); pace is time per distance (min/km). They are reciprocals: 12 km/h equals a 5:00 min/km pace. This calculator works out pace, time or speed from the values you provide, and shows pace in both min/km and min/mile.

How the calculation works

From a distance and a finishing time, pace = total time / distance. Enter 10 km in 50:00 and the pace is 50 / 10 = 5:00 per km; the tool also converts that to min/mile (about 8:03) and to a speed (12 km/h). Handling the minutes-and-seconds arithmetic is exactly where a calculator beats mental maths.

Using pace for training and races

Pace is central to structured training: easy runs, tempo runs and intervals each have target paces. It also lets you predict race times - if you can hold 5:00/km, a half-marathon (21.1 km) takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Knowing your goal pace helps you avoid starting too fast, the most common racing mistake.

Everyday uses

Work out your pace from a training run, set target paces for intervals, predict a race finish time, and compare efforts across distances. It supports both kilometres and miles. Everything is calculated in your browser.
