About VAT

Adding vs removing tax

Adding tax goes from a net (pre-tax) price to gross. Removing tax goes from a gross (tax-inclusive) price back to net — useful when a receipt only shows the total.

The math

Add: gross = net x (1 + rate). Remove: net = gross / (1 + rate). The tax is the difference.

Where it helps

Invoicing, expense claims and bookkeeping where you need to separate the tax portion of a price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by (1 + rate). This tool does it in Remove mode.
What rate should I use?
Use your local VAT or sales tax rate — the field accepts any percentage.
Is VAT the same as sales tax?
They work differently behind the scenes, but the arithmetic of adding/removing a percentage is the same.

Understanding VAT in depth

What this calculator does

This tool adds tax to a price or removes tax from one, at any rate. Adding tax goes from a net (pre-tax) price to the gross (tax-inclusive) total. Removing tax goes the other way — extracting the net price and the tax portion from a gross figure, which is exactly what you need when a receipt only shows the total.

VAT versus sales tax

VAT (Value Added Tax, used across the UK, EU and much of the world) and US-style sales tax work differently behind the scenes — VAT is collected at each stage of the supply chain, sales tax only at the final sale — but the everyday arithmetic of adding or removing a percentage is identical, so this one tool handles both.

The formulas — and the common mistake

Adding tax: gross = net × (1 + rate). Removing tax is where people slip up: you must divide, not subtract. From a gross price, net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). For 20% VAT, you remove it by dividing by 1.2, not by taking 20% off — taking 20% off a gross figure gives the wrong answer because the 20% was calculated on the smaller net amount.

Worked example

At a 20% rate: a £100 net price becomes £120 gross (100 × 1.2), with £20 tax. Going the other way, a £120 gross price contains £100 net (120 ÷ 1.2) and £20 tax. Notice that the tax is 20% of the net (£100) but only about 16.7% of the gross (£120) — which is why dividing is essential.

Everyday uses

Invoicing and quoting with tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive prices, separating the tax portion for bookkeeping and expense claims, pricing products, and checking receipts. Enter any rate to match your region. Everything is calculated in your browser.
