About Temperature

The three scales

Celsius is used by most of the world, Fahrenheit mainly in the US, and Kelvin in science (it starts at absolute zero). Water freezes at 0C / 32F / 273.15 K.

The formulas

F = C x 9/5 + 32. C = (F - 32) x 5/9. K = C + 273.15. The scales have different zero points, so it is not a simple multiply.

Understanding Temperature in depth

The three temperature scales

Three scales dominate. Celsius (°C) is used by most of the world, with water freezing at 0° and boiling at 100°. Fahrenheit (°F) is used mainly in the United States, with water freezing at 32° and boiling at 212°. Kelvin (K) is the scientific scale; it starts at absolute zero — the coldest possible temperature — and shares Celsius's degree size.

Why temperature isn't a simple ratio

Unlike length or weight, you cannot convert temperature by multiplying by a single factor, because the scales have different zero points as well as different degree sizes. Converting needs an offset too. That is why the formulas involve both a multiply and an add — and why a dedicated converter avoids easy arithmetic slips.

The conversion formulas

The core formulas are: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32; °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9; and K = °C + 273.15. So 25°C is 77°F, and 98.6°F (body temperature) is 37°C. Kelvin is just Celsius shifted by 273.15, so 0°C equals 273.15 K and absolute zero (0 K) is −273.15°C.
