Understanding Weight in depth

Mass versus weight

In everyday language 'weight' means mass — the amount of matter in an object, which is what kitchen and bathroom scales report and what shipping is charged on. Strictly, weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass, but for all practical earthbound purposes the two are used interchangeably, and this tool converts units of mass.

How the conversion works

As with length, every unit is a fixed multiple of a base unit (the kilogram). The input is converted to kilograms and then to the target unit. The key ratios are exact or standard: 1 kilogram = 1000 grams = 2.20462 pounds, 1 pound = exactly 0.45359237 kg = 16 ounces, and 1 stone = 14 pounds (about 6.35 kg).

Metric, imperial and the stone

The metric units (milligram, gram, kilogram, tonne) scale by powers of ten. The imperial/US units (ounce, pound) are common in the United States for body weight and cooking. The stone is used mainly in the UK and Ireland for body weight — someone who weighs 70 kg is about 11 stone, a conversion this tool makes instant.

Conversions people search for

The most common look-ups are kilograms to pounds (×2.20462), pounds to kilograms (×0.4536), grams to ounces (×0.03527), and kilograms to stones (÷6.35). Cooking and parcel shipping drive a lot of this traffic, where a recipe or courier quotes one system and you think in another.

Everyday uses

Use it to convert recipe ingredients between grams and ounces, read body weight across kg, pounds and stones, work out parcel weights for shipping, and handle lab or gym measurements. All conversions use the exact international definitions and run locally in your browser.
