About Volume

Metric and US/UK volumes

Liters and milliliters are metric; gallons, quarts, pints, cups and fluid ounces differ between the US and UK. This tool keeps them separate.

Cooking conversions

1 US cup is about 236.6 ml, 1 tablespoon about 14.79 ml, 1 teaspoon about 4.93 ml — useful for foreign recipes.

US vs UK gallons

A US gallon is 3.785 L; a UK gallon is 4.546 L, so always check which is meant.

Frequently asked questions

Is a US cup the same as a UK cup?
No — a US cup is about 236.6 ml. Use metric ml for accuracy.
US or UK gallon?
They differ — US 3.785 L, UK 4.546 L. Both are included.
Can I convert teaspoons and tablespoons?
Yes, both are supported.

Understanding Volume in depth

What volume conversion covers

Volume measures how much space a substance occupies, and it is one of the trickier conversions because three different systems are in play: metric (millilitre, litre), US customary (cup, pint, quart, gallon, fluid ounce) and imperial/UK (which uses the same names but different sizes). This tool keeps them separate so you always get the correct result.

US versus UK — a common trap

The same word can mean different amounts. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, but a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres — about 20% larger. US and UK pints and fluid ounces differ too. Recipes, fuel figures and drink measures can all go wrong if you assume the wrong system, which is exactly why both are offered here explicitly.

Cooking conversions

Kitchen work drives most volume look-ups. Useful equivalents: 1 US cup ≈ 236.6 ml, 1 tablespoon ≈ 14.79 ml, 1 teaspoon ≈ 4.93 ml, and 3 teaspoons make 1 tablespoon. Many countries use a 250 ml metric cup, so a 'cup' in an Australian recipe is not the same as a US cup — converting to millilitres removes all doubt.

How the conversion works

Every unit is defined as a multiple of the litre. Your value is converted to litres internally and then to the chosen unit, using standard ratios. For dry baking ingredients, remember that volume is less accurate than weight — a cup of flour can vary a lot — so weigh in grams when precision matters.

Everyday uses

Convert recipe measures between cups, millilitres and spoons, compare US and UK fuel economy figures, scale drink recipes, and read product capacities. Because it runs in your browser there is no delay and no data leaves your device.
