About Age

Exact age, not just years

Subtracting years alone is misleading near a birthday. This calculator does proper calendar math, borrowing days and months so the result is accurate to the day.

Totals and milestones

Besides the year/month/day breakdown, you get the total number of days, weeks and months lived — handy for milestones like a 10,000-day celebration.

Age as of any date

Leave the second field blank to use today, or set it to compute someone's age on a specific past or future date.

Frequently asked questions

How is age calculated exactly?
The tool subtracts the dates calendar-correctly, accounting for differing month lengths and leap years.
Can I calculate age on a future date?
Yes — set the "age as of" field to any date.
Does it handle leap-year birthdays?
Yes; Feb 29 birthdays are handled by the underlying date arithmetic.

Understanding Age in depth

What this calculator does

An age calculator works out exactly how old someone is - in years, months and days - from a birth date, and can calculate age as of any chosen date. It also shows totals (days, weeks, months lived) and a countdown to the next birthday. It removes the surprisingly fiddly calendar arithmetic of doing this by hand.

Why exact age is tricky

Subtracting years alone is misleading near a birthday, and months have different lengths, so how old exactly requires proper calendar maths. The calculator borrows days and months correctly - accounting for 28-to-31-day months and leap years - so the result is accurate to the day rather than a rough year count.

Leap years and edge cases

February 29 birthdays and spans crossing leap years are handled by the underlying date arithmetic, so the day count stays correct. Because a year is not exactly 365 days, total months and total weeks are computed from the real elapsed days rather than assumed averages, which keeps the milestone figures honest.

Age as of any date

Leaving the second field blank uses today, but you can set it to any past or future date - useful for working out how old someone will be at an event, their age on a historical date, or the age gap between two people. The next-birthday countdown is handy for planning celebrations.

Everyday uses

Find an exact age for forms, eligibility checks, and birthdays; work out age on a specific future date; calculate milestones like a 10,000-day anniversary; and measure age gaps. Everything is calculated locally in your browser, with nothing stored.
