About Data Rate

Bits vs bytes

Internet speeds are quoted in bits per second (Mbps) but downloads are measured in bytes per second (MB/s). Since 1 byte = 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection downloads at about 12.5 MB/s.

The units

bps, kbps, Mbps and Gbps measure bits; B/s, KB/s and MB/s measure bytes, which are 8x larger.

Where it helps

Estimating download times, comparing ISP plans, and planning bandwidth.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my download speed 1/8 of my plan?
Plans are in megabits (Mbps); download managers show megabytes (MB/s). Divide Mbps by 8.
How long to download a file?
File size in MB divided by speed in MB/s gives seconds.
Is 100 Mbps fast?
It downloads at about 12.5 MB/s — good for HD streaming and most homes.
