Pressure is force spread over an area, and several units measure it depending on the field. The SI unit is the pascal (one newton per square metre), but it is tiny, so kilopascals and bar are common. Engineers in the US use psi (pounds per square inch), weather and diving use bar and atmospheres, and medicine and vacuum work use mmHg.
Each unit is defined relative to the pascal, so the tool converts your value to pascals and then to the target unit. The standard ratios are: 1 bar = 100,000 Pa, 1 atmosphere = 101,325 Pa, 1 psi ≈ 6895 Pa, and 1 mmHg ≈ 133.3 Pa. From these, 1 bar ≈ 14.5 psi and 1 atm ≈ 14.7 psi.
One of the most common real-world needs is tyre pressure, which is quoted in psi in some countries and bar in others. A typical car tyre at 32 psi is about 2.2 bar. Mixing them up leads to badly inflated tyres, so a quick conversion is genuinely useful before reaching for the pump.
Atmospheric pressure in weather reports is given in millibars or hectopascals (they are equal: 1 mbar = 1 hPa = 100 Pa). Scuba divers track pressure in bar or atmospheres as they descend. Blood pressure is measured in mmHg. The converter spans all of these so the same tool serves very different tasks.
