About Shoe Size

Different sizing systems

US, UK and EU each number shoes differently. US and UK differ by about one size; EU uses a separate Paris-point scale.

Approximate guidance

These are approximate men's conversions. Sizing varies by brand and style, so always check the maker's chart when possible.

Where it helps

Online shopping from international retailers and understanding size labels on imported shoes.

Frequently asked questions

Is sizing exact?
No — it is approximate and varies by brand. Use it as a guide, not a guarantee.
Does this cover women's sizes?
It uses men's sizing as the base; women's conversions differ by roughly 1.5 sizes US-to-UK.
How does EU sizing work?
EU sizes use Paris points, a different scale from US/UK.

Understanding Shoe Size in depth

Why shoe sizing is a mess

There is no single global shoe-size standard. The US, UK and EU systems each number shoes differently, and they were built on different base measurements, so a size that means one thing in London means another in New York or Paris. This converter gives an approximate translation between the three.

How the systems relate

US and UK sizes are close but offset by roughly one size (a US men's size is about one number higher than the UK equivalent). The EU system uses 'Paris points' — a different scale entirely based on roughly two-thirds of a centimetre per size — so EU numbers are much larger (a US 9 is around EU 42–43).

Why it's approximate

Shoe sizing is notoriously inconsistent even within one system, because brands, lasts and styles vary. Two pairs labelled the same size can fit differently. This tool uses standard men's conversion relationships as a guide, but you should always check the manufacturer's own size chart and, where possible, the measured foot length in centimetres.

Measuring your foot

The most reliable approach is to measure your foot length in centimetres and match it to a brand's chart, since that sidesteps the system mismatch entirely. Women's conversions also differ from men's by roughly 1.5 sizes between US and UK, so note which sizing a chart refers to.

Everyday uses

Use it when shopping from international retailers, deciphering size labels on imported shoes, or buying gifts from another country. Treat the result as a starting point and confirm with the seller's chart. It runs entirely in your browser.
